A Complete Study of the Numerous Citations from the Thirteen Classics Found in Pre-Han and Han Traditional Texts

The CHANT (CHinese ANcient Texts) Database was completed in 1991 and a series of concordances to ancient Chinese texts was compiled using the database. With its unique feature of extensive textual comparison and editorial notes, it is widely accepted by the community of scholars.

Making use of the CHANT Database, Professor Chan Hung-kan and Professor Ho Che-wah put forward "A Proposal of the First Phase of a Complete Study of the Numerous Citations from the Thirteen Classics Found in Pre-Han and Han Traditional Texts" in 1998 and was granted by the UGC a total of HK$0.628M. They have completed the explicit and implicit citations of MaoShi, and ShangShu, also the explicit citations from another four classics, viz., Liji, Zhouli, Yili and Xiaojing. Meanwhile, they are now searching the implicit citations from the aforesaid four classics. Following this, the Second Phase of the Proposal was proposed in 2000 and was granted by the UGC a total of HK$0.631M, to complete the searching of explicit and implicit citations from the rest of the Classics, namely Zhouyi, ChunQiu Zuozhuan, ChunQiu Gongyangzhuan, ChunQiu Guliangzhuan, Lunyu, Mengzi and Erya. A comparison between these citations with the extant versions has also been made and numerous variations were found. These findings are useful research tools for further studies as scholars can save time on primary data collection. A series of books entitled "The Complete Collection of the Citation from the Thirteen Classics found in Pre-Han and Han Traditional Texts" would be published in due course. For the use of a wider community, the results of the research is now made available through the Internet hosted under the CHANT website.
